NEXCANVAS

Whiteboard · self-hosted

A board where everyone draws at once.

nexcanvas is a whiteboard for your own server. Notes, shapes, pen and photos lie on a surface without an edge, and everyone you invite draws along at the same time. (The 3D studio needs WebGL, which this browser does not offer.)

WHAT IS NEXCANVAS?

A whiteboard that belongs to you.

nexcanvas is a surface without an edge for everything you would otherwise stick to a wall or sketch on a scrap of paper. You open it in the browser, on your computer as well as on your phone, and whoever works with you sees every change the moment it happens.

At home

The family plans the move. The floor plan of the new flat is right to the centimetre, the furniture comes from the Floor plan package, and next to it hangs the list of who packs what. Everyone draws along, from the phone too.

For the team

The team holds its retro, moves tasks through the Kanban and finally draws the process everyone has been explaining out loud for weeks. Two people type into the same note, and nobody has to wait.

WHAT NEXCANVAS CAN DO

Everything that fits on a wall.

Draw and write

Notes in seven colours, text, shapes, lines that stay attached to things, pen and highlighter. Photos and PDFs you simply drag onto the board.

Grow it with the plus

A plus on every side adds the next idea and draws the line along with it. With Tab a mind map grows without you reaching for the mouse.

Shapes and templates

Nine packages with 348 shapes of its own, more than 1,600 icons and 33 templates from Kanban to floor plan. Your own shapes and templates come on top.

Live together

Everyone sees every change at once, with pointers and names. Undo only takes back your own steps, never anybody else’s.

Frames and presenting

Frames divide the board into scenes, and at the press of a button nexcanvas shows them one after the other on the whole screen.

Pass it on

As PNG or PDF, as a public read-only page with an end date and a password, or as JSON Canvas for nexlore and Obsidian.

YOUR BOARDS BELONG TO YOU

On your server, by your rules.

In your own house

nexcanvas runs as one container on your own machine. Boards, photos and accounts live in a folder you know.

Who may do what

Every board lives in a space, and every member there may read, write or manage. What you may not read does not exist for you.

Backed up every night

nexcanvas backs itself up and checks the backup when you ask. Of every board people are working on, it keeps a version every 30 minutes.

Nothing goes out

Out of the box nexcanvas only asks GitHub once a day for a new version, without names and without boards. Everything else you switch on yourself.

GET STARTED

How to begin

  1. 01Installwith Docker

You need a machine that runs Docker, for example a small home server or a NAS. With a short Compose file, nexcanvas is up and running in a few minutes.

  2. 02Set upthe first account

The log of the container shows the setup code. With it you create the first account, and that one is yours as the operator.

  3. 03Inviteand start drawing

Make a space, invite the others by name or by link and start with a template or an empty board.
